We are in the initial stages of developing the AHS Alumni Association that can give Texarkana Arkansas School District a political foundation upon which to call as well as a project group to generate funding for various projects.

Attendees of first meeting, September 23, 2002:

Hayes McClerkin, Class of 1949
Sue Segrest Works, Class of 1952
May McGaha Fritz, Class of 1952
Russell Sapaugh, Class of 1968, Dept. Superintendent
Remica Gray, Class of 1969
Jesse Buchanan, Class of 1971
Carol Ann Duke, Class of 1982, CAP/HSTW, & Grants Coordinator
Anne Sanderson Formby, Class of 1984
Marve Register, AHS Principal
Dr. Kathy Lease, Superintendent
Cari Brown, PR & Community Relations

Key Issues Addressed:

  • Time to develop an organization that can give TASD a political foundation upon which to call when needed & to serve as a project group to generate funding as needed

  • Jesse and Russell recently attended a meeting in LR on the forming of this type organization for public schools and came away with knowledge that we are better off forming as a public charity rather than a foundation

  • Wayne Beck, web master for http://www.hogalumni.com has offered it as our “official web site”; we’ve accepted this offer & he will continue to maintain it for us

  • Initial need to calculate basic start up costs for mail out & general business; Hayes donated $500 for use in becoming 501-c-3 organization; soliciting donations via website

  • Have visited with Don Nelson concerning inclusion of the African American alumni groups from Washington & Dunbar schools; it seems to be consensus that they will want to remain separate but individual members will interested in joining

  • AHS Alumni Assoc. will recruit members from classes since the time of segregation but will include the Washington & Dunbar groups in mail out.

  • Other than facility improvements, this group would like to see funds generated that can be used to recruit teachers.  Examples: Scholarships to assist in paying back student loans; Scholarships to pay for the SR year of college; Scholarships to assist in earning Master’s degree; Signing bonuses

  • Have contacted Bill Roberts to assist us with Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and IRS paperwork; he will work within the framework of the $500 we have earmarked for this activity

  • Have been approached about having some sort of informational flyer at the Class of 1957 Reunion October 25; see attached sample.
