Lott & Riera selected to Big 7
These two rough and ready Razorback lineman were selected to first team berths on the Big Seven All State Team.
This is the highest award given to an Arkansas High School athlete.
A defensive and an offensive team was chosen.
Joe Riera, a senior, was chosen as tackle on the offensive team. Joe was selected as tackle on last year's 2nd team, and it was just a short step for him to be on this year's list.
Tommy Lott, also a senior, was chosen as guard on the defensive team. Tommy received Honorable mention on the 1953 team.
Both Tommy and Joe were main stalwarts in the Porker forward this year. It was no surprise that these Hogs were chosen. they were always a thorn in the side of our opponents.
So hats off to the boys on the All-State team.
Don Day, Jerry Dyer, Tom Rampy, and Kenneth Vanderslice were 2nd team selections.
Honorable Mention awards were received by: Ralph DuVall, Phillip DuVall, Dennis Mote, Sam Pierce, Dillard Blue, Bobby Studebaker, Jimmy Jones, Billy Sturgeon, and Roy Lynn Phillips.

Razorback Injuries
Tragedy has struck the Arkansas High gridiron. Players
are being hurt everyday and some are quitting. We have lost the services
of half-back Mike Edwardes for an indefinite period. Mike has his cheek bone fractured
and was in the hospital for about a week. Coach Powell says that he is
making a speedy recovery and should be able to play later in the season. He has been one of
the main factors in the Hog line up and the injury has really hurt the
Razorbacks.
More injuries that have hurt Razorbacks are that of Lionel Thomas and George
Jordan. Lionel has had trouble with his ankle from the first game on.
This has hurt him because he could not go at full speed. Jordan missed the Hot Springs and Little Rock games
because of another one of his numerous brain concussions.

COACHES
This year Arkansas High School is very fortunate
to have a very reliable and confident coaching staff. These coaches aren't exactly strangers to most of us at A.H.S. as Coach "Rip" Powell and
Earl Oxford are both from Jefferson Avenue Junior High, where they achieved two undefeated
seasons. Back also is Coach Paul Kirkpatrick, who was backfield coach here several years earlier.
Coach Powell has installed the T-formation again this year after the use of the single wing for two
years. Coach Powell is originally from Bauxite, Arkansas, where he played high school football and
was selected to All-State. He went to Southern State at Magnolia for four years and was selected for the All- Conference team. His first coaching
job was at Jefferson Avenue Junior High where he was assistant Coach for two years and head coach for 3 years.
